You Need To Know: Health Unit Says It's Ready For Increase In H1N1 Cases

The local health unit maintains it’s ready for a possible increase in the number of H1N1 cases this fall. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says there is a flexible plan in place for the coming flu season and response will match the level of illness in the community. According to Dr. Charles Gardner, Medical Officer for the health unit, surveillance programs will involve monitoring for outbreaks in institutions, lab test results, and reports of travel-related respiratory illness. And for the first time the health unit will put schools under the microscope and keep track of absenteeism rates. Gardner says for the most part, the H1N1 illnesses have been mild and in fact the death rate is below averages for seasonal flu.
