It seems snowmobile trails on private property in Muskoka may be closed down again this winter. The threat comes after the District of Muskoka decided to move forward with plans for a Forest Health Program after failing to find common ground on a Memorandum of Understanding with the Muskoka Land Owner’s Association. Members of council voted on a motion last night to distribute brochures produced by the Ontario Woodlot Association, to support organizations including the Stewardship Network and to provide a Forest Health Technician to interested landowners. Muskoka Landowners Association Vice President Deb Madill says since the District did not listen to their members and although it’s not what they really want to do, it’s now up to the landowners to decide whether or not to close access to trails on private property. Madill adds the money being spent and the energy being put in to educating landowners is a waste of time because landowners didn’t ask for it. The cost of the new Forest Health Program is $20,000.00.
