This Just In: More Than One-Third Of Ontario's Hospitals Fall Into The Red

Maintaining a budget wasn't possible last year for more than one-third of Ontario hospitals. Infact nearly 38 per cent of the province's 159 public hospitals were in deficit at the end of March, according to newly released government documents. Kingston General Hospital reported a $14 million deficit, and Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children was nearly $13 million in the red. Many of the facilities have promised to balance their books by the end of this year to fall in line with Ontario's zero-deficit law for hospitals. N-D-P health critic France Gelinas says that'll mean hospitals will be forced to make more cuts to staff and services to get themselves out of the red. Here in Muskoka, our hospitals are in the red by over 4-million dollars. During the summer Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare announced plans to cut beds, rehab services and close the Burks Falls and District Health centre to pull themselves out of debt.
