Everyone is OK. That’s the message from Huntsville’s assistant fire chief Terry Joiner after a fire ripped through the Empire Hotel in the downtown core. Joiner said the fire started at about 9:30 last night. Although he was unable to confirm how many people lived in the apartment building, one firefighter said there were about one hundred and fifty tenants. Joiner said everyone got out safely and they’re being housed at nearby hotels. The Salvation Army came in to assist with finding temporary living arrangements. The blaze, which took firefighters from 8 different stations, including Rama, was under control at 4:30 this morning. Joiner said it’s too early to tell what caused the fire. Anyone traveling in downtown Huntsville this morning should expect difficulty getting around the Centre and Main Street block where the Empire Hotel is located. The Huntsville legion would like to invite all the people who were displaced by last night’s fire to a complimentary lunch. All the emergency services personnel and anyone who offered a place for the victims to stay last night are welcome as well. The lunch will be held at the Huntsville Legion @ 21 Veterans Way and will be held from 11:30 until 1 this afternoon.
