Breaking News: Update on Empire Hotel Fire: Shelter Desperately Needed For Victims

Over forty tenants of the Empire Hotel in Huntsville have no place to call home. The apartment building went up in flames last night around 9:30. It’s still unknown what caused the fire or where it originated, but Huntsville's Mayor Claude Doughty said it's believed the fire started in the roof structure. Huntsville's Fire Chief, Steve Hernen says the extent of the water and smoke damage is estimated at $5 to $6 million. The Salvation Army helped 43 people find a place to stay last night. But, since it’s Thanksgiving weekend, all the hotels in the area are booked, so the victims will have no where to go tonight. The Salvation Army is urging area residents who can provide some shelter this weekend, even for a night, to call them directly at 789-3398. As for donations, the Salvation Army says they are not immediately looking for clothing. What is needed at this time for the victims is toiletries and fresh undergarments. Donations can be dropped off at the Salvation Army Church on Mary Street in Huntsville. Meantime, the Algonquin Animal Hospital is currently caring for some animals that were injured in the fire. The Animal Hospital desperately needs to get in touch with the any tenants who may be missing a pet so treatment options can be discussed. The Animal Hospital can be reached at 789-5181. Last night’s fire needed 8 surrounding fire departments to assist in battling the blaze.
